Near Mahanad Bus stand , there is a lord shiva temple named JATESWARNATH SHIVA TEMPLE. Mahanad is a very ancient place on the holy river, the Ganges. It’s name is found in the famous Gururha Purana. This Temple is the most ancient temple in the Country. The original temple ie. Mandir had been built up by Guru Gorakhanathji in more than 7000 years ago. The Present temple was re-built during the Gupta dynasty by king Chandra Ketu. The first Mahanta of the Mahanad Jateswar Nath Shiva Temple was none other than illustrious sage Kapil Muni. The famous sage Bashishtha Muni was also a Mahanta here. The present Mahanta is Shri Madhava Nathji Maharaj is a “ Siddha “ & “Darshani” yogi. The Nat Mandir ie. the outer hall just in front of the entrance of the temple is also worth seeing .It is very large square size hall to accommodate more than 200 devotees at a time and is a piece of excellent ancient architecture. There is a banyan tree behind the main temple and on the bank of the lake is called as “Chandraketu Daha”. There is a popular belief that this banyan tree fulfils the prayers of any earnest devotee. It is very ancient and no body knows it’s age.
